Should you start a podcast?

With everyone and their mother starting a podcast, it’s easy to feel if you don’t jump on the bandwagon now it’ll roll through town and be gone forever.

As I mentioned last week, a podcast is a great way to build a relationship with your customers if you’re a business. It’s also a potential source of revenue if you build a significant audience and a fantastic outlet if you’re a naturally creative person.

When you’re starting out it’s not uncommon to measure yourself against podcasters pulling in millions of dollars and think ‘I want to be there right now,’ but the reason those podcasts are so successful is because the hosts are committed to consistently delivering content and enjoy putting it together (probably not as much as swimming in their money, Scrooge McDuck style I’m sure).

Podcasting might be the perfect avenue for you or your business but maybe it’s not the right time to start because you have other commitments or you haven’t found the right idea yet. If that’s the case you’re better holding off until you’re ready, rather than jumping in the deep end only to realise, after the second gulp of water, you can’t swim.

Truth is your podcast will never be successful if you’re not committed to it 100%”

If you’re umm-ing and ahh-ing about pressing record on your first episode or you’re seriously wondering whether podcasting is for you, check out this piece I wrote for Problogger that details some things you should ask before you get started.

These tips aren’t just applicable to podcasts. In fact, if you’ve been thinking of starting any creative endeavour it’s worth sitting down and going through these things before you bet the house on it.

There’s a huge difference between holding back from starting something because you’re scared and holding back because you’re not ready so it’s important to work out which one you are.  Because there’s nothing wrong with waiting till it’s the right time for you.
